Tracy’s preceding four records were all of high quality. A casual, lived-in take on Americana, seemingly inspired partly by her homeland of Canada, partly by her adopted home of Melbourne, and significantly influenced by the best quality Americana of the past half a century or so.
But there’s further progression on You Be The Lightning. A little more confidence in the songwriting, more emotion in the performance, greater attention to detail in the production & ably supported by her crackin’ band.
The first time you hear ‘Catch You’, you’ll wonder how every McNeil record isn’t already in your collection. When she utters the final line of the record on ‘Golden Age’, there’s every chance you’ll want to go right back to the start and play it through again.
