He wasn’t the first to be seduced by the nefarious delights of L.A., & probably won’t be the last, but the experience very nearly killed him. Having moved from St. Louis a couple of years back, his aptly titled 9th album documents the cost of excess, a modern fable coated in a lacquer of confessional blues, jazz & vintage swing. He and the band skilfully avoid any notions of contrivance, instead bending these vintage styles to his usual highly persuasive effect.
