Loudon Wainwright continues his fine recent form with Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet). The first track, Brand New Dance, kicks off – literally it’s a rockabilly number – on a theme that pervaded his last album, Older Than My Old Man Now. That theme, of course is mortality, a favourite of Wainwright’s. ‘‘You wake up in the morning and stare into the abyss’’, the 67-year-old sings. From there he traverses family, parking in New York, walking the dog, going to the morgue, looking for alcohol in a dry county and adopting the mind of a killer about to embark on a massacre at Christmas (inspired by the Newtown school shootings). Haven’t Got the Bues (Yet) is another master class of social studies in a song.
