Acclaimed singersongwriter, Charles Jenkins, has released his 20th studio album. Entitled’Radio Sketches’, the record is a collection of 12 songs originally conceived for broadcast on Melbourne independent station, 3RRRas part of Jon von Goes’ weekly radio show.Each week, von Goes would challenge Jenkins (and his other guests) to present a song in response to a theme of his choosing giving them just five days to prepare. Themes would often be a single word, rarely easy or obvious, and occasionally testing. Themes in recent months have included Inflatable Things’, ‘Dinner Dates’, and ‘Invented Words’. Charles explains, “We’d get the email from Jon on Tuesday, I’d aim to have something written by Thursday, record on Friday, before sending it to Jon on Saturday for Sunday’s show.”At first,” said Jenkins, “I’d ransack my back catalogue for something I could shoehorn into the theme. If the search was fruitless, I’d write something new to suit. Eventually, I found myself enjoying the process so much that I’d write a new song even if I had an old song that would work.”
The result is an album of raw, exuberant songs that fall like rain from the heart; ideas captured and bottled in the heat of the moment, and as fresh and heartfelt as anything the master songsmith Charles Jenkins has done before.
