Named “one of the finest female voices in the country right now” by Beat magazine, and after a huge year of releases with her other groups GL & Dorsal Fins; Ella Thompson has thrown open the door of her solo career with this gorgeous debut ‘Janus’. This allusion to the Roman two-faced God is represented musically, as Thompson covers eclectic ground including Neo-psychedelia, ‘80s synth-pop, and sparse balladry.  The album was recorded with with pop alchemist John Castle (Washington / Sweet Jean / Vance Joy) and features some of Melbourne’s finest players, in Leigh Fisher and James Gilligan. Now, this isn’t a sunny synth-pop record by any stretch; there’s misery in many of the lyrics (particularly the album closer Losing You), but despair has never sounded so good.
