An essential snapshot of just post-Big Star Alex Chilton, live at the height of New York City’s punk mid 70s explosion. Though it’d be a stretch to call this music “punk,” Chilton undoubtedly found plenty to love in the anarchic spirit of the first few waves of CBGB-centric bands. Accordingly, an infectious and rowdy vibe is present in every note here, as Alex leads a rhythm section (is that the dB’s Chris Stamey on bass?) through a very pleasing mix of Big Star favorites and typically eclectic covers. Don’t miss the charmingly ramshackle rendition of the Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” (introduced as “a song by Charlie Manson”!) and a stinging “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine,” as well as a sleazed out reading of “The Letter,” from Chilton’s Box-Tops days. Chilton is in fine form, both on guitar (he’s always been a bit underrated in that respect) and vocally; he’s the kind of singer who couldn’t hit a wrong note if he tried. And boy, did he try! Various tapes of Chilton at the Ocean Club have circulated among collectors for years, but if I’m not mistaken, this one is a new, and very worthy, unearthing, with sound quality that easily beats the boots.
