Description

On the evening of Friday, October 1, 2018, The The played their first show in 16 years at the Royal Albert Hall. Reportedly, tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale. Turns out that absence does help the heart grow fonder. The legendary post-punk one-man-show-turned-band haven’t had a proper album since 2000 and the intervening years have only seen a handful of soundtracks and a new single in 2017, “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming.” But in 2018, Matt Johnson just decided to get the machine rolling again by bringing back bassist James Eller, keyboardist DC Collard and drummer Earl Harvin (guitarist Barrie Cadogan is the only member who wasn’t part of a previous lineup). The resulting double live album The Comeback Special collects highlights from The The’s catalog, giving us 23 songs spanning almost two hours. The full band sound walks a fine line between giving faithful renditions of the songs everyone knows and loves and giving them just a bit more oomph in the live setting.
