After The Storm was the album that initially caught critics & listeners attention. Norman Brown‘s r’n’b inflected style introduced a whole new audience to the fluid & expansive category of JAZZ. A little funk, great slow jams, vocals, and great interpretations/ remakes. That was 1994, and this is 2020. Heart To Heart is Brown’s latest release, and on this his 12th recording, he’s understandably not ‘reinventing the wheel’ but revisiting those smooth/summery grooves & sounds that made him a mainstay in the ‘Smooth’ Jazz scene at the beginning of his career.
With some fairly ‘weighty’ & highly accomplished musicians in their own right coming on board both as friends & collaborators…. ie Peter White, Jeff Lorber, and Paul Brown, the ‘sum of the parts’ makes for a highly enjoyable & cruisy listen…it’s already feeling like Summer is just around the corner….right?
