Description

With her debut album Exile in GuyvilleLiz Phair reset the female singer-songwriter genre in much the same way that artists like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Chrissie Hynde, and Patti Smith did. The album’s refreshing and startling honesty and naked sound was a  blast of fresh air.  Celebrations for the 25th anniversary of that album brought her to Australia in 2019, but she hasn’t released a new record since 2010’s Funstyle, a record that didn’t exactly set the world alight.

If she has slipped your mind, it won’t take long to get reacquainted when you hear Soberish. And you should hear it, because it’s her best album in decades.  Phair has penned a collection of tunes that marry her candid musings with polished, accomplished California rock sounds. One thing listeners will notice is that Soberish shares the clean sheen of Liz Phair.  The best songs have Phair employ her idiosyncratic knack for writing emotionally honest lyrics that eschew pop cliches.
