“Let the Good Times Roll” is the J.D McPherson’s second album, and he breezes through 11 songs while barely slowing. His most common touchstone is Little Richard — Penniman’s spirit is felt everywhere — but McPherson has a gift for small, effective tweaks that keep the songs from being slavish copies. The tweaks themselves can sometimes feel forced, but more often they give old music fresh context.
