Delbert McClinton’s recordings for ABC Records were the high water mark in a stellar career, an incendiary melding of southern Rhythm & Blues with Texas blue-eyed country-soul. These are the finest solo albums from this highly regarded singer, songwriter and multi-Grammy Award winning artist. They sound fresh and appealing to this day. ‘Victim of Life’s Circumstances’ was hard country laced with R&B, funk and soul and included perhaps his most famous song, ‘Two More Bottles of Wine’ (a US country #1 for Emmylou Harris).
‘Genuine Cowhide’ was pure, rollicking R&B and ‘Love Rustler’ was the third straight classic album in a row with a deep rootsiness added to a more contemporary funky sheen. McClinton is one of rock’s truly great singers and interpreters. For authentic southern country-soul-R&B, this is simply as good as it gets.
