In 2016 Melbourne three-piece Soul outfit Cookin’ On 3 Burners stormed the charts worldwide when ‘This Girl,’ their collaboration with French producer Kungs became the most Shazamed song in the world and hit number 1 in France, Belgium and Germany and reached #2 on the UK Charts and #7 on the US Billboard Dance charts. In their home country of Australia, ‘This Girl’ was #1 on Shazam for four weeks and has achieved Platinum sales accreditation. The song has also had 359 million+ Spotify streams and 206 million Youtube views.
The hugely popular This Girl remix sparked a new project for the hard-working trio. On March 17, CO3B will release the compilation album Vs, featuring six tracks from their back catalogue remixed by a cast of in-demand dance producers. “It really worked with Kungs, so we thought, let’s do some more,” Mason says. “We wanted to find songs in our back catalogue that would fit in that remix mould.”
Alongside Kungs and Lenno, the remixers include San Francisco’s own disco/house connoisseur Funk LeBlanc, Stuttgart’s Niklas Ibach and local heroes Yolanda Be Cool. The remixes travel from breezy beachside grooves to sassy house flavours, each suffused with that distinctive CO3B strut. “Dance music is often computer or synthesiser based,” Mason says, “so to have that ‘live’ element in the remixes brings a real freshness.” The Vs remixes arrive ready to command club dancefloors and house parties all year round.
In addition to the line-up of remixes, Vs also brings together the six original versions of these CO3B’s vocal tracks. Which not only highlight how talented this band has always been, but also makes this album the perfect listen – no matter whether you came to the band from hearing the Kungs remix, or whether you always loved their soulful sound. Included are their best-known collaborations such as Losin’ Streak with Daniel Merriweather and a few more Kylie Auldist star turns on tracks such as Push It Up and Settle The Score.
With the dance world now tapped into their sound, a new chapter in the Cookin’ On 3 Burners story is just heating up
