Guitarist-vocalist Harper and harmonica player-vocalist Musselwhite tap into some of their deepest emotional and spiritual material to date, blending trad roots and classic themes with a contemporary aesthetic. ‘No Mercy In This Land’ revisits old, classic blues territory, but brings a modern vibe with the production and context. Where these songs could have been sung about struggles decades ago, the layout is crystal clear and the subject matter has been superimposed onto contemporary America. Harper’s guitar and voice are, as always, delivered with great aplomb and skill, but it’s his ear that is the most impressive. Musselwhite is infallible.
